LUPIN COFFEE: COFFEE FOR THE FUTURE

WHY AN ALTERNATIVE?

Don’t get us wrong, we love coffee. But there are a few good reasons to consider an alternative for our everyday consumption. Too much coffee can be hard on the body and the environment – and it can also negatively impact labour conditions in the global coffee regions. Time for a rethink. Choosing a locally grown alternative can relieve some of these strains on our bodies, the environment and coffee farmers.

WHY LUPINS?

Allow us to introduce the lupin – an easy-going, wholesome and charmingly beautiful legume. The blue sweet lupins we use make particularly tasty coffee and are gentle on the stomach (and the nerves). The sweet lupin is a special breed with very low alkaloid levels, making them easily digestible for us humans, in contrast to other wild or garden varieties. Lupins can be grown regionally in many parts of Europe, are robust – they even grow in the sandy soil on the outskirts of Berlin – and also fertilise the farmland while they’re at it. As humble legumes, they don’t contain caffeine or gluten – but they are in fact a superfood. Scientists are working on ways to make lupins the future plant protein source for Europa (step aside, soy). Another advantage of lupins growing easily here in Europe is that we have the opportunity to produce our lupin coffee in a truly climate-friendly way – we make a conscious effort to incorporate the principles of circularity wherever possible in our process.

OUR VARIETIES

lUPINION PURE

Classic and smooth: Lupinion Pure is a warming, cosy treat with a nutty aroma and a subtle note of chocolate – completely caffeine free. We like it best with oat milk.

LUPINION BLEND

The best of both beans: A well-balanced blend of nutty lupins with fine notes of berry from the Arabica coffee. For a gentle pick-me-up with a fragrant aroma.

PREPARATION

However you enjoy your coffee, the ritual is yours. You can prepare Lupinion in just as many ways as your regular brew. Here are a few tips and suggestions that you can keep in mind when making your lupin coffee. Feel free to experiment yourself and find out how you like it best – you’re welcome to share it with us on Instagram if you like…

Lupinion Filter

FILTER COFFEE

Dosing for Pure:
3 tsp to 250 ml water

Dosing for Blend:
2-3 tsp to 250 ml water

Tip: douse the filter bag with hot water before brewing, then it won’t soak up as much.

Lupinion French Press

French press

Dosing for Pure:
3-4 tsp to 250 ml water

Dosing for Blend:
2-3 tsp to 250 ml water

We like to let our coffee steep for about 3-4 minutes before pushing the strainer down.

Lupinion Espresso Maker

ESPRESSO MAKER

Dosing for Pure:
2-3 tsp to 200ml water

Dosing for Blend:
2 tsp to 200ml water

As lupin coffee swells more than bean coffee, it works best if the strainer isn’t too full.

Lupinion Siebtraeger

PORTAFILTER

Dosing for Pure:
approx. 2/3 of the usual amount / 12g

Dosing for Blend:
approx. 2/3 of the usual amount / 14-15g

As lupin coffee swells more than bean coffee, it works best if the strainer isn’t too full.

Lupinion Vollautomat

FULLY AUTOMATIC

Preparation for Blend:
As lupin coffee swells a lot, be sure to set the machine to use more water and less coffee powder.

Preparation for Pure:
Because of the swelling properties of lupin coffee, we can only recommend brewing with Pure for espresso. Make sure to set the machine to use more water and less coffee powder.

Lupinion Bohnen

WHOLE BEANS

You can grind Lupinion in a manual or electric coffee grinder for a taste experience that’s even more intense. You will notice during grinding that the lupin beans are slightly harder than coffee beans.

WE LIKE IT BEST WITH OAT MILK

It gives our Lupinion a really caramelly taste.
